Hey, this is a great idea for the site! I forgot one of my favorite books "Mohawk" by Richard Russo. Russo has written more acclaimed novels, but this first one (based on Herkimer, I believe) is still a great book and very good at getting at small town, upstate N.Y.
Carl Carmer's My Kind of Country is a classic, and "Upstate is a Country", one of the pieces in it, might resonate with Yorkstaters, or might not. (My copy is buried in a box at the moment, unfortunately.)
Arch Merrill also wrote volumes - literally - about upstate New York. Slim Fingers Beckon is about the Finger Lakes, The Towpath" is about the Erie Canal, Southern Tier is about, well, the western end of its title, and that's just a few of them. I remember these being collections of pieces he wrote for newspapers or magazines, but there's an awful lot of information in those.
I would like to say, for the record, that Jesse is awesome
ReplyDeleteFrom the list...
ReplyDelete"A graphic novel…about a mid-nineteenth century plan to establish a Jewish homeland upstate and carbonate Lake Erie, among other things."
You mean it's not already carbonated?
