But it really starts in my county (Orange), particularly in chester and Florida NY in the Black soil region, where a large portion of the state gets their onions. Southern NY is just as far from the downstater persona as someone from Plattsburgh. Especially during the Onion Fesitivals, the downstaters tend to stick out like a sore thumbAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18370689.post-31612702330239734992007-10-08T15:16:00.000-04:002007-10-08T15:16:00.000-04:00I just started a similar yet different blog on Ups...I just started a similar yet different blog on Upstate NY. I go to college on Long Island, which is about as far from Upstate as you can get (im from Scotia, NY, just across the Mohawk from Schenectady). People here think Upstate starts at the Bronx. Ill give them Poughkeepsie as the southernmost frontier of my native land but the boundary is based entirely on culture. From the mid-Hudson all the way to Plattsburg and from Albany to Buffalo, there may be differences but we all share much more in common than we do with folks in NYC, LI, or their associated vacationlands downstate. Pinning down what that tie is that makes us Upstaters is tough, its at once clear and nebulous. More on that in the next post.Maxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04849886867100277645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18370689.post-1134336695795017162005-12-11T16:31:00.000-05:002005-12-11T16:31:00.000-05:00Haha, I suppose it could be called that. I had a ...Haha, I suppose it could be called that. I had a girlfriend from Watertown (for those of you not from the neighborhood, Watertown is in Jefferson County, which, like Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, is in the northern fringe of the state up by Quebec) and she would insist that folks from the North Country were in Upstate and everyone else is from Downstate or some unnamed area. The locals up there in the north seemed to take great pride in their Northern orientation, and I must admit that the cold, snow and isolation means that it takes a hearty individual to live up there. I know from my 6 months in the Adirondacks that I wouldn't enjoy a winter up there.

However, I think that isolating the Upstate as only New York's northern "hump," and lumping the rest of the state together isn't a productive behavior. North Country cities like Plattsburgh and Watertown are incredibly similar to more southern cities like Oswego, Syracuse, Rome and Rochester and the rural areas share many similarities with rural regions in Western or Central New York, especially in comparison to NYC. While winters up there are certainly harsh, February in Buffalo is no picnic either.

I think that, without treading on North Country pride and identity, it would be more useful for us to recognize our similarities and work together as a region for our common betterment.

Thanks for posting The Donald and I hope to hear from you again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18370689.post-1134327235681958132005-12-11T13:53:00.000-05:002005-12-11T13:53:00.000-05:00I would assume then that all of us who reside in C...I would assume then that all of us who reside in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties must reside in "upstate" upstate New York!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18370689.post-1133681952801959702005-12-04T02:39:00.000-05:002005-12-04T02:39:00.000-05:00It's kind of bittersweet to think that "well at le...It's kind of bittersweet to think that "well at least we aren't as bad as the Panhandle of Texas."
